Apparently these salt water marshes are great habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Does the salt water marsh have decomposing stuff? And does it only cordgrass?

The marsh is a tidal estuary - it almost completely drains at low tide and is perhaps 3 feet deep at the deepest point at high tide - depends on the tides though.
