Rhinoceros Aucklet
There are lots of birds identified as the "Northern Equivalent of Penguins". The body shape and coloration of these birds reminds me a lot of penguins. The horn on their beaks makes them easy to identify.
This is the Nimpkish Burial Grounds - east end looking west. The closest pole was build in th 1970's to honor Mungo Martin - a chief in the Kwakiutl band and a great artist that carved many replicate poles that preserved native history and helped revive the native culture after dark history of later 1800's, early 1900's. The pole was carved by Henry Hunt and Tony Hunt - and was the first pole raised in Alert Bay in 40 years.
