Two Pairs Of Barrows Goldeneye
Sunday, January 29th, 2023 at 12:12:12 This is my first Barrow's Goldeneye. I'm impressed by how much larger the head is on the left male than the right male - I assume it's all feathers and they can puff them up. Species: Bucephala islandica (Barrow's goldeneye)

Columnar Basalt Cliffs
Sunday, January 29th, 2023 at 12:11:55 Apparently this whole area was once a giant volcano - hence all the columnar basalt. There is a road on the far side of those cliffs - I don't know how easy it is to hike in the area. John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > Hong Kong 9 > Columnar Basalt Cliffs

Black Eared Kite
Sunday, January 29th, 2023 at 12:11:54 There were lots of large predators flying around the shores in Sai Kung. I believe I saw an Osprey at a long distance. The Black-eared Kites were by far the most common - later in the day I saw at least 10 from our position on the boat. Species: Milvus migrans lineatus (black-eared kite)

Black Eared Kite Turning
Sunday, January 29th, 2023 at 12:11:54 I really wasn't expecting to take photos of this bird - that is why the exposure is so off. I was walking in the area (actually taking photos of butterflies) and the bird flew - much further away than a bird in Vancouver does. I shot with what was set. Shooting a dark bird against an overcast sky is always a poor idea. Species: Milvus migrans lineatus (black-eared kite)

Crowds At Yehliu Geopark
Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at 23:22:46 The tall rock in the centre is "the most famous" so everyone wants a selfie with the rock. The man in the reflective jacket has a whistle to keep people behaving well - he will whistle if you go out of bounds of step on a rock formation you aren't supposed to. There were several "whistle guys" around and I was quite glad they were there or else this place would be rubble. John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > Taiwan > Crowds At Yehliu Geopark

Rufous Hummingbird
Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at 23:15:53 This tree was maybe 5 feet high but it was out of the wind so bird could rest and see anything coming. He was skittish - even 20 feet away away he would alight. Species: Selasphorus rufus (rufous hummingbird)
