Russet Percher
This was probably the easiest species to photograph - long perching times and quite striking colours compared to the background.
Species: Neurothemis fulvia (Fulvous Forest Skimmer, Russet Percher)

Red Helen
I was happy to see a new to me kind of large butterfly. The day was a bit cooler than last year so not as many insects were out.
Species: Papilio helenus (Red Helen)

Eight Spotted Skimmer On Hand Rail
These are probably the most common dragonfly the day we were there. Lots of Damselflies too.
Species: Libellula forensis (Eight-spotted Skimmer)

Four Spotted Skimmer On End Of Reed
It impresses me how patient these animal can be - if you are slow you can approach quite closely.

Orb Weaver On Web
The spider was backlit which is why it's so light.
Species: Araneus diadematus (cross orbweaver, orb-weaver)

Eight Spotted Skimmer
I was surprised how lazy this insect was given that it wasn't the early part of the day.
Species: Libellula forensis (Eight-spotted Skimmer)

Four Spotted Skimmer On Diagonal
1/25th of a second - I'm really surprised it is sharp.

Claira Found Caterpillar
Claira found a caterpillar walking across the trail. She didn't want to pick it up in her hand, but she was okay with using a stick.
Species: Pyrrharctia isabella (banded woollybear)

Tree Nymph Eating From Flower
I don't add species to animals that are in captivity. While this particular species was flying around outside the zoo, I believe this picture was taken from inside their butterfly exhibit.

Four Spotted Skimmer
shot f 14 trying to get enough depth of field to get from one wing to the other. Shot 1/60th of a second at 400asa. Still missed it - the focus point was probably the stem so I lost the wing closer and the bug is blurry. Good try, but fail.

Dragonfly With Nymph Skin
This isn't the dragonfly that just crawled out of the pond - the dragonflies liked this perch and regularly pushed each other off of it. I'm not even sure that is the skin of a dasher - there are other species of dragonflies in this pond.
Species: Pachydiplax longipennis (Blue Dasher)

Banded Alder Borer On Log
I was really surprised to see this bug - I have never seen anything like it in Canada before. I've seen Macro/bug blogs online, mostly in tropical countries and I thought they have all the interesting insects. We aren't so bad.

This is a particularly hard life example - I've seen others around the office in much better shape.

Orange Winged Grasshopped
There were about two dozen of these flying along the trail close to the highway. It's hotter over there because there aren't trees. These do look like butterflies when they are flying.

Banded Alder Borer
This is a photoshop composite of two different images - stacked in focus. I just figured out how to do that in photoshop and now it's my new crutch.

Paddle Tailed Darner Face
This particular insect liked to hover at the same spot for a long period of time so it was easy for me to take photos of it.
