This is the boardwalk setup around this patch of desert.

Bright Golden Aster In Dry Grass
I like how you get a splash of colour in a dry and drab background of dead grass. The park labeled this as "Chrysopsis villosa", but apparently that name is now out of date - it's "Heterotheca villosa var. villosa"
Species: Heterotheca villosa (hairy false goldenaster, hairy goldenaster)

Antelope Brush
This plant and it's crazy deep roots (much deeper than the plant is tall) is the cornerstone of this ecology.
Species: Purshia tridentata (antelope bitterbrush)

Cracked Earth
I like this cracked mud - it made one of the most uniform histograms I've ever seen.

Eroded Mud In Shadow
The blue is backscatter - light from the sky. This particular soil was fine so it made soft curves - other areas were harder and made crumbly edges.

Lumpy Knoll
I'm guessing there is something special about that top piece of ground that stopped it from eroding as quickly as everything else.

Layers And Lumps
What makes all these different layers? Different plant life? Ash layers? Once river bottom?

Shrub On Rock
I would love to know what this.

Walking In Desert
Usually we are swamped in trees - having open views is nice.

Cliffs Up

You have to walk up this to get home.  The path starts on the left side of the frame.

Cactus Patch

A sign said the catus grows by the inch and dies by the foot. It was pretty common but if was close to the path it looked pretty ratty.

Looking Back

That cut in the plain leads down to the river and phantom range.  We walked out to the cliff edge.
