Humpback Tail Flicking
I have never seen humpbacks do this before. The whale would come up tail first and flick water on the surface. The guide book suggested it help drive food into denser groups. We didn't see it come up like bubble net feeding. We were anchored, it was late and far from the whale so these images are what I got.
Species: Megaptera novaeangliae (Humpback Whale)

Barred Owl Triptych
Owls aren't easy to find - we only found this because someone else said there was an owl near by and we went looking for it. This was a short walk before dinner and I didn't bring my photo bag - just a 105mm and the 50. This is what I could do with what I had. The person at reception says there are three owls currently living in the garden.
Species: Strix varia (Barred Owl)

Belted_Kingfisher
This is a three image composite (in photoshop). I don't own a long lens so this is the best I can do.

Black Eared Kite
There were lots of large predators flying around the shores in Sai Kung. I believe I saw an Osprey at a long distance. The Black-eared Kites were by far the most common - later in the day I saw at least 10 from our position on the boat.
Species: Milvus migrans lineatus (black-eared kite)

Black Eared Kite Turning
I really wasn't expecting to take photos of this bird - that is why the exposure is so off. I was walking in the area (actually taking photos of butterflies) and the bird flew - much further away than a bird in Vancouver does. I shot with what was set. Shooting a dark bird against an overcast sky is always a poor idea.

Ocypode Cordimana Flying Down The Beach
I'm amazed how fast modern cameras can focus.

Rufous Hummingbird
This tree was maybe 5 feet high but it was out of the wind so bird could rest and see anything coming. He was skittish - even 20 feet away away he would alight.

The vultures didn't come that close to Mount Doug.

Chinese Dolphins Near Tai O
This boat ride highlighted the problems with my technique. The boat had safety railings all the way around and the whales came up on the opposite side from me so I often got them in my shot. The whales surface quickly and sink - you loose half your time just trying to find them and focus. My camera isn't super fast (ISO or frame rate) so I didn't get much.
Considering the boat trip is only a few dollars (but doesn't last more than 15 minutes), you get what you pay for.
Species: Sousa chinensis (Chinese white dolphin, Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphin)

Peregrine Falcon
Shooting against a bright background doesn't help. This bird never really got close and of course it was moving fast.
Species: Falco peregrinus (Peregrine Falcon)

Great Blue Heron Eating Starry Flounder
I'm going with Starry Flounder because of the prominent stripes on the sides of it's body. There were several Great Blue Herons in the water and they were easily finding prey.

I really like the penguin dress code. There were a number flying around Race Rocks, some standing on shore.

Apparently a Trampoline is great for training for doing crazy skateboard tricks. Justin has had lots of experience getting airborne.
