Abalone Shells On Rocks
I don't think these are abalone harvested by people. I think the birds eat them and drop the shells.

Purple Sea Urchin Shell

Ruth found this shell on the beach on Hope Island. We added a little
water and the purple color came though.

Beach Treasures At Hoi Ha Wan
Hoi Ha Wan is a park so you can't take things home. We took a photo of the prizes so that we could remember what the kids found at the beach.

Japanese (Northern) Abalone and Plate Limpet

Ruth brought us a number of treats from the ocean.  The Abalone is cool - it's a large snail that uses those
large holes for breathing and the underside is beautiful.  Apparently these abalone can live for 50 years.

Purple Ring Top Snail on Giant Kelp

Ruth brought us a number of treats from the ocean. This piece of kelp had a few
snails on it.

Black Turban (Black Tegula)

I'm having a tough time calling this one. It has some gunk on it but it doesn't have the worn
top a Black Turban is suposed to have. If it is a Black Turban, they are reported to live 80 to 100 years (or until
someone steps on it). It's on a piece of Giant Kelp (Giant Perennial Kelp) that it
was feeding on.

Crab Shell on Sand

The crab shell has the same mottling that the beach sand has - I'm sure in a monocromatic vision
system, it's harder to see.

Rocks and Sand Dollar

This Sand Dollar passed on a long time ago.  It's been sun bleached.

Sand Dollar Crashed into Sand

This shell looks like a space ship that crashed into the beach.  I wonder how old this shell is
(how long ago the sand dollar itself died).

Sand Dollar with Kelp on Top

Qualicum beach is a great sandy beach.  We found a number of Sand Dollars
(or shells) in the beach and sand.

Arbutus over Shell Beach

This is on the short hike around the spit in Montegue Harbor.  Arbutus and Shell beaches
are hallmarks of the Gulf Islands.

Helen With AShell
I believe this is a Tiger cowrie. I found it on the bottom wedged between two rocks. It was wedged in so well I had to use both hands to pull it out. Once we got to the surface we figured out it was still live (something in the shell) so it went back in the ocean. Another couple pulled up another example and it was much heavier for the same size - I think our example was slowly starving.

Motion Blur Snail
I don't have a good snail guide book (I have never found one), but Robert Forsyth seems to be working on a snail guide book for BC. He was kind enough to offer his opinion on this snail photo:
Hi John,

I've taken a look at your photo. It is a haplotrematid (family
Haplotrematidae), and is a half-grown individual. Not being able to see more
clearly some fine details of shell micro-sculpture, I cannot be entirely
certain of its Identification, but I'd say (about 85% certain) that it is
Haplotrema vancouverense -- the Robust Lancetooth snail, a common (and one of
the larger) species of land snail along the BC coast.

Hope that this helps.

Regards,

Robert
Thanks Robert!

Abalone Shell On Sphagnum
The very rare bog Abalone! I don't know how this shell got her - most likely it was either carried by a human (mmm, shiny), or a bird like a crow or raven (mmm, shiny). We found other bits of shellfish around, so I believe the bird story.
