Apparently, this was the favorite resting place of Keoua, high chief of Kona.

Solid Lava Waves

The Lava has solidified (maybe a decade ago) but it still reminds me of how
the lava was flowing.  The ripples look like the lava was getting very viscous.

Coming out of the Forest

I'm standing on the now solid surface of Kilauea Iki Crater.  This surface
was molten lava some time in 1959.

Rocks in Kilauea Iki Crater

It looks like bubbles formed just below the surface but the rocks solidified before they
reached the surface.  Years later, the surface of the bubbles broke.

Mike and Val on Lava

The lava is a lot of fun to walk around on. The lava was about 6km away this day
so it was too long of a walk for us to actually see it.

Lava at the End of the Road

It was coming near the end of the day and the sun was setting.  So nice.

The End of the Road

The lava flowed this far, but no further.  The highway used to go through,
but a lava flow 1983 destroyed the route.  Now it's the start of an inland trail
that (depending on the lava conditions) can take you to flowing lava.

Lava Rock

On our way down the hill we would pass outcroppings of rock.  Jer
is holding out a piece of lava rock he picked up.
