Star Fish

These animals were exposed by the retreating tide.

Species: Pisaster ochraceus (Ochre Star)

Starfish 1

Standing arouind in a wet suit on a hot summer day (yes I burned), I explored some artifical tide pools on shore while waiting for everyone else to get out of the water.  (And why were we first out of the water on every dive?)  This is shot through about 2 inches of water.

Starfish 2

The starfish is out of focus (not for a lack of focusing range - the 105 is great!), probably from that neoprene suit pulling me back upright while I try to focus through water.  The scars on the rock in the upper right are probably from barnacles.

Ochre Star
Pisaster ochraceus - very common around here. I'm not sure what's going on with the joined area - it looks swollen or damaged.

Stars On Rock
The vermilion star really caught my eye but the Ochre stars (both common morphs) are pretty nice. The seaweed is Sea lettuce. It could be one of 8 species (Genius Ulva) so I can't call it.

Giant Pink Star
This was camera in the water photography.
Species: Pisaster brevispinus (Giant Pink Star)

Blue Bat Star
Considering these are supposed to be very common, it took me forever to see my first bat star.
Species: Asterina miniata (Bat Star)

Flipped Over Ochre Star
The star was doing it's best "I'm out of water, conserve water" shop closing, but it was still sending out feet in places to see if it could find something to grab onto to.
