These spheres remind me of those useless balls of ratan that staged homes have in dishes. The effect when they were lit in trees was pretty good.
Layers Of Basalt And Confused Trees
I'm a big fan of the columnar basalt. What you notice after looking at this photo is that some of the trees are growing up and some are growing down.

This is a rare photo of a tree that works. It does a few things to make that happen - the tree has a completly independent silhoutte, there is a human scale element in the photo to provide scale and the lighting allows you to find it. These are rare circumstances.
