days are definitely getting longer and the weather is much nicer -
not exactly warm, but a lot nicer than the cold short days of
February. We live close to two good playgrounds so there is
not shortage of things to do on a weekend. Nara is really
growing into the near by climbing frame - she can now climb up the
net (with some help and a good spotter) and she is comfortable going
down the spiral slide all by herself.

Easter at Grandma's House
Grandma
kindly offered to host Easter this year. There are a lot of great
things to do at the grandparents house starting with a walk over to
the local playground. The playground is a two stage playground
    - toys appropriate for really young children as well as toys with
more challenge for older kids. Swings are always a favorite.

Marcus is a bit of a funny duck - some days he really doesn't like
to have his photo taken, other days he asks for it. Today he
was having a great time running around and actually asked (or
challenged) me to take his photo. It's lots of fun chasing
kids around a playground - focus is sometimes a challenge but the
    results can really pay off.

James
turned one two months ago and he is trying really hard to keep up
with the other kids. The more junior area had a good
slide for him and he seemed to quite enjoy the trip down.
Getting two brothers down at the same time turned out to be nearly
    impossible.

Nara likes the swings. Slides are nice and running around is
good too, but she really enjoys swings. She will often finish
on one swing and ask to move to the swing adjacent - got to try them
    all!

width: 200px; height: 133px;" name="linkimage7911" hspace="10" class="stdImg"/>
After a hard run around the playground it's time for snacks.
Nara knows her cousins well enough that she seems comfortable being
fed. I'm not sure how James feels about this.

Cordova Bay

Timing the tides with kids activity time is always tricky but this
Sunday we lucked out. Cordova bay has a large sandy beach that
gets much larger with the falling tide. We went out for a run
    around.

width: 133px; height: 200px;" name="linkimage7920" hspace="10" class="stdImg"/>Nara
really enjoyed walking in the waves with her boots. Parenting
tip - make sure you are comfortable going into the water at least as
deep as your children are. Nara had good boots on but I only
had runners on. When she was ankle deep in the water she was
out of reach from me unless I was willing to get wet shoes. I
    know for next time.

Backyard Fun!

There are a lot of kid friendly attractions in Victoria (Beacon Hill
Park comes to mind). Sometimes the best attraction is the
place that doesn't require a drive at all. Just open the back
door and let the kids play!

When your kid goes to day care you never really know what skills she
has picked up. I know the day care has lots of ride on toys
(she seems to have that down) but pedal toys are new to her.
Marcus has a year on Nara and definitely knows a thing or two more
about making the toys go. Thankfully he was patient.

April 2012

driest month in Vancouver so getting outside is always a bit of a
challenge. Yaletown is trying to create a bit of a
destination mini-festival in "Illuminate Yaletown" and it didn't
take much of an excuse for us to hop a bus and check it out.
(We also went to the 2009

The festival closes off a few blocks of Yaletown and sets up a

work a weekend so it's just Dad and Daughter for the day. I
like the bird Sanctuary and it's roughly the right time of the
year to see the Snow Geese. Turns out I was wrong on the
timing of the snow geese (they are in Washington State around
January), but there are always lots of Mallards!

Kids are always learning new things and
Nara has learned the fun of "Puddles"! She had good wet

she wanted and there would be no problems. Turns out
there were more puddles in Chinatown than there were at Bird

Did I get to see Snow Geese? Not so much. Owls?
No. Ducks? A few. A morning out with the

(Truth be told, there were some Night Herons resting in the
sanctuary while we were there. I could see them but they

get to go to Butchart gardens for some skating and a trip on the
Carousel. Skating starts at the top of each hour - 45
minutes of ice time and then the ice is cleared and flooded for
the next batch of skaters. Marcus and Dad have been
practicing skating for a while so he looked pretty good out there
on skates. Caitlin, Kayla and Justin are old hands at
this. The Jeffries family were sadly MIA this year.

After skating, we take the shortest path available to get to the
Carousel. The gardens are well lit with a 12 days of Christmas
theme but young kids don't have much patience for walking
about. The Carousel is an additional charge for each ride.

The lighting around the Carousel is actually a bit of a
challenge. The carousel has a lid which leads to lots of
shadows across peoples faces. The light isn't particularly
strong, the Carousel is moving - I wish I had brought my tripod.

While a modern
reproduction, the carousel is quite a beautiful piece of work.
Combined with smiling faces, it's a nice place to take some photos.

Goldstream Park
<img align="left" alt="Nara And Mom Walking" src="http://www.johnharveyphoto.com/Life/12_2011/NaraAndMomWalkingSm.jpg" style="border: 0px

weekend at Grandma's presents a lot of choices for
entertainment. Shopping is always a strong attraction, but we
decided to go see dead fish instead. Goldstream park is
short drive from Vancouver and has a strong Salmon run around
Christmas time. The trails are wide, the parking is free and
there is even a nature house to warm up in if you get cold.
    What is not to like?

Having had a child, almost every photo I've taken in the last year a
half has been of my kid or that of a relative. I finally have
a picture of something else - an American Dipper! It's a local
bird that lives close to streams but isn't a duck. It's long
been on my list of "look out for" but this is the first time I have
seen one (and recognized what it was) while out on a walk.
Caitlin is studying marine biology (one of my favorite topics) so we
needed to find some water. We considered a drive out to
Botanical Beach but the tide isn't that low and it is a long drive
with a baby. The Breakwater has nice access to the ocean and a
few good rock outcroppings to do the tide pooling thing.

has been a long while since we went to White Rock for a
visit. We finally got a chance to remedy the situation.

Having a back yard of your own can be pretty fantastic. In a
public park you need to be aware of the people around you - is
your daughter going to run in front of a bike or push over a
smaller child. In your own backyard (or a borrowed family
back yard) you have fewer of these concerns. Of course
playing with someone elses toys is great too!

My aunt Jenny was kind enough to organize a picnic so all of the

course it's good to see everyone else as well. Seeing your

There is lots to do in the Courtenay/Comox area. We decided to
go for a walk on the breakwater because I remember a near by
playground (Marina Park) was quite good. The boardwalk was
    good for a run around.

<img align="left" alt="Nara With Helen Walking On Beach" src="http://www.johnharveyphoto.com/Life/07_2011/NaraWithHelenWalkingOnBeachSm.jpg" style="border: 0px solid;

also visited Kai Beach. We live fairly close to kits beach but
we don't go very often. Kai beach was a little cool (we have
had a cool summer) but still lots of fun to walk around a dig up
    shells.

For younger children, having a set of keys will often attract their
attention and help make a good photo. Nara now seems mostly
past that. The new trick is the "I'm going to get you!"
game. A parent can do that off camera and Nara will focus on
the parent and what is going on around her. It worked out
    well.

July 2011

      Playing the Parks

Playground Across the Street

Having a child changes your life. Obviously you get less sleep
and your "spare time" is now dominated by parenting, but there are
more subtle effects as well. A park you used to ignore you now
causes you to take mental inventory as you walk by: baby
swings - check; low slide - check; clean grounds -
check! The park across the street from our house has a small
playground and we now find ourselves out there pretty much every
    day.

I was
also quite surprised to find out that animals see children
differently than adults. At Granville Island you can
accidently step on a pigon if you aren't careful. Children
don't have this problem - the birds seem quite aware of kids and
where they are. A child twitches and the birds scatter.
An adult gets up and the birds rush in looking for dropped food
    scraps.

Playing on the Swings (Pandora Park)

Picking a restaurant also changes. Of course you are
interested in if they have a high chair (or my pet peve -
restaurants with broken high chairs), but knowing if there is a park
near by is also handy. We found a great Pasta place on
Hastings, partly because Pandora Park was near by.

Water Park at Granville Island

Some parks are pretty much famous. The water park at
Granville island is well known amoung children - listen to them
talking at a different water park and they often compare
parks. Nara doesn't have much experience with water parks so
her first visit was a little cold and timid.

Petting Zoo at Queen's Park
<img align="left" alt="Nara With ACalf" src="http://www.johnharveyphoto.com/Life/06_2011/NaraWithACalfSm.jpg" style="border: 0px solid;

I find it difficult to image splitting time between two children, but

First Trip to Hong Kong With Nara

Happy New Year!

We got off the plane in the morning and
that evening was New Years. Even though I was tired, I decided
that New Years was too good to pass up so I went down to the Star Ferry
Terminal. I arrived around 6pm and the place was already full -
tripods and camera everywhere. A kind photographer let me stand
next to him and we waited for 6 hours for the fireworks to start.
People were really nice - I saw an MacBook Pro charging three iPhones
that had run low on batteries and lots of people were "saving" spots
when another person needed to go to McDonalds for food or a
drink. I was quite civil. Tour boat after tour boat left
from our location and near midnight high end boats arrived for the
party going on above us.

Fireworks from buildings were quite cool. There wasn't a lot of
variation, but it was certainly cool to see.

The neat part was what happened next. Three hundred thousand
people all decided to leave at the same time to get on the same
MTR.

The crowd was dominated by young (univeristy
aged) and
there were certainly patent. Unlike Vancouver post fireworks
crowds, there didn't seem to be much alcahol involved. The crowd
poured into the streets and got caught in a traffic jam. We
probably stood there for 15 minutes waiting for humans in front of us
to get out. Once we got moving, I saw the extent of the crowd -
streets were packed for blocks and blocks.

Nathan road was curb to curb people and
there was a long line up just to get into the MTR station. I
decided to walk to one of the further MTR entrances and the line up was
much better. The MTR wasn't crazy and soon enough I was home in
Mong Kok ready for sleep. Helen and the Grandparents watched the
fireworks on TV - they may have had a better view.

Walking Around With Nara

Apartments in Hong Kong aren't huge so it's
common to
go for a walk to get some space. Nara was often in a state of

chest (in a soft carrier) and I'm taking photos by putting the camera
behind my shoulder and just randomly shooting - no preview.

We have passes to Van Dusen so we can drop by any time we want and not
feel bad about only having a short visit. I had been meaning to
visit earlier because VanDusen has lots of opportunities for fall

A SLR has a bit of a learning curve and babies have short attention

the world the same way we do. Obviously they don't have the

out everything about their bodies. One day Nara found her feet.

We usually dressed her in footed sleepers so naked feet were only
available at changing time. That mean that every time we changed
her, her feet went in her mouth. Those little hands aren't that
coordinated either so there are a number of misses, but she is
obviously happy when it all comes together.

Thanksgiving On the Island

When you have a baby, it's important that you don't
let the details of life chain you to your house and habit. Going
to the Island (when it was just Helen and I) used to be an easy affair
- we both pack some clothes and basically go. When you mix in a
Baby, it becomes a car filling affair. Even with the effort, it's
important to get out and visit people.

We had brunch at the Kingfisher - the local spa/resort. It's an
amazing spread so I'm always amazed that people agree to have their
photos taken afterwards.

UBC Apple Festival
One year, many years ago, David and I were biking
