August 2026
The
busiest month of the year
Manning Park Day Trip
I like Manning Park - We did a
day trip to Manning in June
2020 , but we
drove up to
the Alpine area in 2022. I wanted to do a trip more
like the 2020 trip, but a little later in the year so we could
visit the Alpine area which generally opens after July 1st.
The drive out is about two and a half hours from Vancouver and our
first stop is the lookout.
The lookout is a challenging spot. There is a lots of
wildlife here (mammals and birds) and they are all trained to
expect hand outs despite the no feeding signs. When you open
your car door there is a small parade of ground squirrels that
rush you to see your odds. The birds are often watching from
the surrounding trees - if they see food moving, they jump in
closer.

There are often a lot of flowers growing
close to the parking. Everything was toasty - it's been an
early summer and many of the flowers that I really like like
spreading Phlox are well past their prime.
On a
Manning
Camping trip in 2015 I woke up early and drove to the Alpine
to see the birds. It was nearly noon so I thought there was
almost no chance of seeing birds, but as we drove around a corner
I saw a large bird on a rock taking in the view. We pulled
over and it turned out it was a mother bird and a large sized
family of juveniles. Grouse are funny - they really believe
in their camouflage so once we sat down the birds seamed to have
no problem eating and walking around us. Eventually they did
cross the road an disappear in to the forest but it was a nice
experience.
We drove up to the Alpine area and broke out our picnic.
After lunch we want for a short walk on the trails.

I was lucky to see small butterflies
almost as soon we started walking. These are small
butterflies and they jumped between the flowers and the dirt for
mud. It didn't take long before they flew off far from the
trail.
The flowers were short to the ground and many were in the seed
stage. We met some hikers who told us the flowers were
better a few km down the trail, but Claira was already done with
being in the bright sun.
We drove down to lightning lakes but the kids were already tired
and didn't want to walk around the lake. Sad, we turned back
to the city.

We stopped in Hope to put fuel in the car
at the lower than the mainland price and the girls found ice cream
in the next strip mall over.
Family Reunion:
Many years my Aunt hosts a family reunion on
her family farm. We try to arrive early on Friday night and
meet everyone. This year my Aunt and Uncle have setup their
old car and a banner to make a photo spot.

The kids all got together at a badminton court and played a 4 vs 4
match.

Sonia, Kevin and her kids were camping on
the farm this weekend, which we normally do as well. This
year we decided to stay indoors at a small resort just down the
road. As the sun set, the kids found an flint and
steel and used it to make sparks.
The next day we got our party on.

Meals with all of these people is quite an
organization challenge. Organization started weeks ago with
baking treats and shopping and on the day everyone chips in to get
things setup and taken out.
One larger project was getting the cookies out on tea
stands. Lots of impressive things - tin after tin of treats
and at least 4 different tea stands.

Madison was thrilled to help populate the trays and I was
impressed with how little of product was consumed in the setup.

The fully populated tea stands were taken
out and setup at the buffet. The boxes of treats made it to
the outdoor fridges.

Claira and Grandma made a double batch of "Pink Fluffy" - a
combination of jello, whipped cream, and strawberries that the
kids love every year. Claira has made batches of this
herself so she is pretty good helper on this large batch.

If it was up to the kids every meal would be desert only, but for
adults we need normal things like sandwiches.

Everything comes out and lunch and served!
The pink fluffy is a crowd favorite so it's a good place to hang
out for portraits.

The next door neighbors have three emu's. One of them is
curious enough to visit the fence and the kids figured out the
bird likes to eat blackberries. The kids went to the
blackberry bushes and brought berries to the bird.

Most of the family don't own chickens. The kids get excited
easily,so we go very slowly picking up eggs.

After dinner we did some formal portraits. Each year we have
a different setting and this year it was car.

Most years there is a skill testing race or
test of strength. This year we had a multiple phase obstacle
race. The race starts with a foot planting section,
then a hula hoop over the head, then a ball challenge and finally
a sprint to a jump through the exit gate. There are prizes
so everyone takes this at least a little bit seriously.

Each heat has 3 people of roughly the same age and the winner is
determined by time.
The younger people do put in more effort.

The most competitive race was the one of the girls races.
The race was so close that it had to be rerun to determine the
winner.

There were a variety of prizes given out.

After the racing was done, a few kids wanted to rerun the race.
This trip we stayed at Oyster Bay Resorts which is just down the
road from my Aunts place. The kids were a little slow
getting up so I walked across the street to the large beach where
the tide was out. The tide was quite far out so there was a
lot of sand to walk on.

The beach had l lots of walkers (with dogs) and people were
already out with kayaks and paddle boards. The birds were
running to open beach to find something to eat.

I have approximately 1 billion photos of Great Blue Herons but I
still can't stop myself from taking more photos. There were
several great blue herons feeding in the puddles and shallow
foreshore. Sadly, as the beach got busier, the herons flew
off.

We went back to farm to continue our visit. Being Sunday
morning, some people were already on their way home. Being a
smaller group of kids, David got out a tractor so the older kids
got a chance to drive the tractor. This is a modern tractor
so it's quite easy to drive. Nara and Claira both took the
tractor down to the lower field with a bucket full of kids.

Richmond Night Market
The Richmond Night Market has announced this
is their last year. We have been to the Richmond Night
Market a few times as well as Night Markets in Asia so I wanted a
visit. We picked a Saturday night and went:

Lightning Storm
We don't get a lot of thunder storms with lightniing in Vancouver
- the mountains seam to break up storms. The deck in our
appartment is covered so if it isn't too windy I can leave the
camera out and take a time lapse. Generally I shoot 27 to 30
second exposures but this storm was so active I probably should
have shot every 15 seconds.
I combined the images into a time lapse to show just how active it
was.
