Walk Around Beaver Lake, Stanley Park

Blue Dasher Dragonfly On Leaf
With the kids back in school our days are dominated by errands and activities.  I happened to get a Saturday afternoon off and decided to take a walk around Beaver Lake in Stanley Park to see some Dragonflies.  There are many dragonfly species in BC and I was hoping to catch something new.  These little jewels are nearing the end of their lives but are still full of activity on a warm day.

I have a macro lens that can get great details, but I'm not keen on standing in the lake to take the photos and dragonflies do respond to how close you are.  The 400mm gives you the reach to isolate dragonflies (and butterflies) without scaring them.  That said, you do tend to draw a lot of attention with the tripod and monster lens.

The lake is always eye catching, even if there are no beavers out.

I took a stroll around the lake and there are no shortage of nice things to see.  Being fall you see more seeds and late season flowers but that is better than the dry leaves we are going to have in a few more months.

Walk in the UBC Endowment Lands

Sometimes the kids need to get outside and go for a walk.  This weekend had the first pro-d day of the year so the kids had already been home for two days and they had dug out from a huge pile of homework (Claira just started high school).  Going for a walk gave Mom some time and quiet.

The kids did eventually stop making so much noise and focused on the nature.  The Endowment lands are busy so you don't really get long periods of silence, but it was still nice to take in the details.  This was my first time seeing this birds nest fungus - I really wished I brought my macro lens or even a tripod.

Hot Pink Seed Pods
As we were walking back to the car the kids spotted a maple tree, the same that had been around their elementary school.  The kids would take the seed pods and rip them open to make stickers for their nose.  While they are both in high school now, I think they enjoyed the call back to younger days.
