Red Wing Blackbird Comparison
Red Wing Blackbirds were quite common in the Marsh - you could easily see two or three at any time. I thought it would be handy to have a photo of a Red Winged Blackbird in similar light, but it turns out they aren't closely related to Yellow Headed Blackbirds. Species: Agelaius phoeniceus (Red-winged Blackbird)

Yellow Headed Blackbird
There were at least two in the marsh - you could hear one call and then the other. Not that closely related to the Red Winged Black bird - different family. Species: Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus (Yellow-headed blackbird)

Mourning Dove In Branches
People first spotted this bird across the river. The binoculars crowd is generally happy having seen a bird - the photo people crossed the river and got closer to get a useful image. We didn't get close enough to scare it though - a crow came by and literally chased it off it's perch. Tags: bird

Mallard And Two Ducklings Feeding In The Rocks
The Mom wasn't feeding - she was just watching. No squawking, no flapping it's wings, just watching. Species: Anas platyrhynchos (Mallard)

Downy Woodpecker And Pine Siskin
From what my book says, this is classic Pine Siskin behaviour - trying to convince a larger bird to leave the food source so it can have it all to itself. This shot also shows prime Pine Siskin features - forked tail and yellow bar on the wing. John Harvey Photo > Blogs for 2024 to 2005 > April 2013 > Downy Woodpecker And Pine Siskin

Common Yellowthroat
This little guy had a really nice song and was flying along the length of the ditch. He (this is a male) mostly hid in the brambles but did sometimes come out. I used to think that all small birds were "little brown jobbies". Not so much anymore. Species: Geothlypis trichas (Common Yellowthroat)
