Bubble Bursting
Because the mud is thick, it wasn't hard to guess the bubbles and the pops. The short shutter time on the D2X made this an easy shot.

Buried Torii
The concrete pillars and long since broken plastic chains really detracted from this sight. It doesn't help that it's sandwiched between a school and some other building and really is blocking a useful path.

View Of Volcano
It was unfortunately a fairly hazy day so you can't see good detail in the volcano.

Selling Sulfur And Film
There was a road side pull out just before we got to the volcano center (read shopping center). I liked the vivid color of the sulfur - apparently from Aso Volcano.

Cinder Cones On Mauna Kea

From what I understand, these cones are pushed up during eruptions, but lava may not flow out of them.

Tree Hole and Wood

The ejected pumice was still hot and burned the trees it came into contact with.
The trees died and left holes in the pumice. The wood is now mostly gone, and many
of the holes have filled in with loose material.

Trail into Thurston Lava Tube

The lava tube was found in 1913 by Lorrin Thurston.

Walking Devastation Trail

A lava flow in 1959 ejected pumice cinders that covered a large region
down range from the Volcano.  This trail is built on top of the pumice and
shows how life is reclaiming the area.

Walking in Kilauea Iki Crater

It was a little moist (blowing mist), but a lot of fun.

Steam Vents in Kilauea Iki Crater

The vents emit hot air with moisture. On this moist day it looks
like steam, but the air is just warm to the touch.

Tufts of Grass in the Area of Devastation

The grass is starting to colonize the pumice field.  Once grasses have moved
in, leafy plants start to take over.

Entering the Kilauea Iki Crater

In November 1959, this would have been a boiling lake of lava.  In 1988 they found the lava
had retreated to 300 feet below the surface.  I have never entered such a strange landscape.

Pressure Ridge in Kilauea Iki Crater

The surface of Kilauea Iki Crater has been pushed up places
and some of the cracks emit warm air or moisture.

Boiling Red Spring at Umi Jigoku
Umi Jigoku is known for it's sea-blue pool, but I found the more natural (and less steamy) rust coloured pool more attractive.

Steaming Rock at Umi Jigoku
Umi Jigoku is known for it's sea-blue pool, but there also is a rust colored pool on the site.

Blue Pool of Hell
Umi Jigoku is known for it's sea-blue pool, but the grounds and surround gates are also worth visiting. The pool was hard to photograph - there is so much steam, the pool and the color is often obscured.
