Acronicta impressa (Willow Dagger Moth)

Identifying a butterfly is easy enough - try it before it has wings. I don't (yet) have a good caterpillar book.

I am amazed at what you can find on the internet. I asked Jeremy Tatum, the person behind Butterflies and Moths of Southern Vancouver Island, and he came up with the species. Thanks Jeremy!
