Saturna Canada Day

Saturna Island is a bit hard to visit.  Ignoring that there isn't a lot of ferries (really, only four a day), once you get on the island you can do most of what you want in a single day.  In July 2025 (last year) we did a trip to Saturna and saw what I think of as big attractions - Winter Point, East Point, The Saturday Market and the Vineyard.  Why got back just a year later?

Foot Passengers At Lyall Harbour
Being a small island, fundraising for community amenities is a bit of a zero sum game.  Saturna has events where they invite off island folks and the largest is the Canada day lamb roast.  The Lamb roast is hosted on a farm nearest Winter Point which is maybe a 10 minute drive from the Lyall Harbour Ferry Terminal.  The Island arranged a fleet of local drivers who pick up folks at the ferry terminal and drop them off at the farm.

Got Treats At Farm Stand
As we had our own car, we decided to first take a ride out to East Point to go for a walk before lunch.  Compared to other Islands, there aren't a lot of farm stands on Saturna.  There is an interesting farm stand (and a decent place to pull off) on the way out so we stopped for a snack.

East Point is an amazing park - it is the east most point in the Gulf Islands with a view into the US in almost all of the directions.  It is a natural meadow with a nice ramp down to the beach.

It was low tide so we went down to the beach to see if we could find anything interesting.  Because this is the mouth of a straight, the current flows fast here (there are warnings for Kayakers because the currents go way faster than you can kayak) which generally leads to rich inter tidal sea life.  It's nice to see solid aggregations of sea stars.

Piece Of Dropped Octopus
We found an interesting orange blob which I first thought was an anemone but turned out to be a piece of an octopus.  I imagine this is part of a meal that maybe a river otter found and they somehow left it behind.

Nara Taking Photos Of Octopus

Just off the coast are a number of small islands covered in kelp.  There was a rotating cast of birds that landed on the island and then went into the water looking for a meal.

Being the open of the Georgia Straight to the open Pacific, there is no shortage of Marine traffic sailing by.  It is supposed to be speed and noise controlled.   Apparently it's also fairly common to spot whales using the same channel for transit but none for us.

The old fog horn building is a staffed museum.  They have quite a few posters for local events including the Canada Day Lamb Roast which has been running for 50+ years.

The actual Lamb roast meal starts at around 2pm so we drove back and got our tickets.  The ideal startegy would have been to get our tickets before we went to East Point because we got tickets in the nine hundreds and had an hour to wait before our turn.  We had a lot of time to take in the live bands, the local market and the other food stations.

Lamb Roast

The Lamb was apparently quite good - you can pick what part of the animal you want (want more organ meat?  Done!)  The meal comes with a rice dish, a salad, a locally baked bun (they make more than a thousand) and a cookie and coffee when you are done.  The tickets are $35 a person.  In Vancouver you can no longer buy gulf Island Lamb - even getting Fraser Valley Lamb is hard (and expensive) and most stores have Lamb from New Zealand or Australia.  Getting a truely local meat product is a rare luxury.

Botanical Beach

As the tides were low, we decided to drive out to Botanical Beach for a day.  I've been to Botanical Beach lots of times, but a trip in April to 2022 had a new twist - Helen found a Thick-horned Nudibranch in a small tide pool.  Basically this taught us that we weren't trying hard enough to find novel wildlife in the tide pools. I figured this would be a good trip to slow down and spend time.  Unfotunatly, it all went wrong as soon as we went to the bathroom.

There are two trails down from the parking lot - one goes to Botanical Beach and the other goes to Botany Bay.  You can get from Botany Bay to  Botanical Beach by trail, but the trail is muddy.  For reasons I still don't understand, I was told to go even though my dad was still in the bathroom.

The walk down doesn't take long, but the walk over to botanical beach is quite slow.  We walked over and down to the beach.

Kids Looking In Tide Pools

There is a rock shelf that has deep bowls full of sea water.  The ocean might leaves these pools exposed for hours at a time, but the pools are so deep that the water is quite healthy for us to look into.

The kids have seen lots of tide pools so they started looking for their favorite items.  The sea urchins are a favorite, but I think the kids really like to find the Sea Lemons.

The bright colors in the pool attract your eye.  The Sea Lemons are easy to see between the purple mussels.

Trying to find the nudibranch takes time.  We spent some time looking, but my father hadn't joined us.  We tried to call his cell phone but it was off and quite likely not in his pocket.

We waited and waited, but my Dad was still missing.  I decided to walk back and find him.  Sure enough he was on the trail between beaches and he was winded.  We made our way back to Botanical beach (after I made a phone call).

Sadly, I didn't feel like searching tide pools so we very slowly walked our way back to the car.

Carpet Pelt Lichen

Nara pointed out a lichen on the ground.  At first I thought it was Freckled Pelt Lichen - a very common lichen around Victoria.  Looking closer there were little tips that looked like a fruiting body.  Turns out there is a lot of species of lichen that grows here and I should try harder to find some of them.

Salt Spring Saturday Market

Bell On Skeena Queen

Salt Spring is the easiest island to visit.  There are three ferry terminals on the island and you can arrive from Victoria, Crofton or Inter Island including Vancouver.  The Salt Spring Island Saturday Market is pretty famous and the Saturday morning ferry was busy (but not full).

Fullford Harbour

We have a favorite parking spot near ArtSpring and we made a bee line for Embe Bakery.  After buying a minimum number of treats for the day, we crossed the road and visited the market.  The Market at Salt Spring features local products (everything has to be grown or made on the island).

We have seen a lot of these vendors before.  The lemon-aid vendor is a nice family we have bought treats from in the past.

There were some vendors with trailers custom configured for the market.  Some of the vendors visit other markets like the Sidney Thursday night market so having your whole stall portable opens up more options.

There was a vendor selling felt flowers that was really inspiring.  The felt is cut from sheets, glued and mounted on a stem.  We have all of these things at home but have never made something so beautiful.  The produce vendors are also impressive - beyond looking delicous, some of them unique varieties you can't find anywhere else.

With out Embe bakery finds and our market finds, we went to the Heritage Orchid near Beddis Beach.  We ate at this picnic table before at an Apple Festival event back in 2021, and it was both standing and available.

Beddis Beach is at the end of the park so we walked down and had a walk along the beach.  The beach has is mostly sandy and it was busy.  The kids found an swing on the beach.

The rocks down the way do include a few small tide pool.  My parents were cooking in the sun so we turned around and walked back to the car.

Fields Of Lavender
I do like to do new things so this trip we stopped at Sacred Mountain Lavender for a brief walk in the fields and shopping.  The fields aren't large (compared the photos you see of other farms) but the intensity of flowers was very attractive to the local insect life.

Nara And Claira In Lavender Field

I have a soft spot for Butterflies - they aren't easy to photograph, they are beautiful and there a lot of diversity on the coast.  There were perhaps half a dozen butterflies flying around from two different species - larger Pale Swallowtails and smaller Painted Ladies.

This is a working farm and they had a wide variety products in process or for sale.  The Lavender Ice Cream was a hit with the kids.

We drove down to the ferry terminal and waited for the ferry home.  There is a small public dock next to the ferry terminal so we spent some time "dock fouling" - looking for things growing on the dock.  I was happy to find two different species of tube worm slowly filtering the ocean.
